The Overlook Project at the Alabama National Cemetery
In 2012 the idea for a Scenic Overlook to be built at the Alabama National Cemetery (ALNC) was conceived, presented to, and approved by the Support Committee for the Alabama National Cemetery (SCALNC). This would be the largest and most expensive project ever taken on by the all-volunteer non-profit group. In spite of the immense challenge of approvals needed, and fund raising for a major construction project, the SCALNC membership recognized the need for such a project to better serve family members and other visitors to ALNC. The idea was to provide an ideal place for family members and friends to go after Committal Services or any time they want to visit the cemetery to remember, reflect or renew strength, while leaving the naturally scenic site as untouched as possible. The Concept Proposal was approved by the Under Secretary for Memorial Affairs in December 2013. This cleared the way for fund raising to begin and with the help of many dedicated and patriotic volunteers, donors, and friends, the Overlook is now a reality. Overlook construction and final inspection was completed in January 2020.
The Support Committee officially donated the Overlook to the National Cemetery Administration on January 30, 2020, followed by a Ribbon Cutting and Dedication Ceremony on March 28, 2020. Take a tour of the Overlook by clicking on the Video below.
Shoal Creek is a place of natural beauty in the midst of the resting place of honored American military heroes. Here God’s creation will speak solace to the sorrowing, strengthen the weary, and renew an appreciation to all who come of the price of freedom through sacrifice.
